Hello. My name is Connie. I want to talk.

I’m not going to lie, this is not my first blog. This is not the first time that I talk about my food adventures, my travels and things that generally amuse me. However, it will be the first time that I have talked since I lost my voice circa 2012.

I spent 4 years studying for a PhD in Art History and what glorious years they were. However, not having an academic background, learning to write and talk like an academic was a struggle. My words were too enthusiastic, too passionate, too full of excitement; my words were basically like a tiny Jack Russell puppy trying to jump off a page. Thus, I spent 4 years trying to drown the puppy out my own voice in order to sound more like a grown up.

It didn’t occur to me that there was anything wrong with the way that I wrote and I’ve never been one for writing creatively. I like to write facts – I like to write facts like a museum label. However, I began to notice that I could no longer write about the things that I enjoyed without them sounding dry and prescriptive; a bit like an art history lecture without any pictures. You get me? Where did that over-excitable Jack Russell puppy go? (FYI I’m not really a dog person)

So this blog is a challenge for myself; learning to talk and write again, like I used to before academia kicked in. I am going to hunt down my voice and give it a punch in the face for leaving me. Well, maybe not quite a punch in the face but some strong words are definitely going to be had. No doubt there will be much gin and cheese consumed during the journey.
